What are the main causes of neck and back pain?

Most people experience back and neck pain at some point in their lives. It could be anything from a strain, cramp, sprain or general pain in the neck. What causes Albany back and neck pain?

These are the causes.

Trauma to your spine

Trauma to the spine is the most common cause for neck and back pain. It can be caused by injuries sustained in sports or accidents, but can also occur from chronic conditions like arthritis.

Inflammation and pain can result from injury to your spine’s discs or ligaments. These injuries are common in sports injuries, as well as older people who have suffered previous spine injuries. These cases are usually treated with surgery to replace damaged discs.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)

Musculoskeletal conditions can cause pain anywhere on the body from muscle strains to tears in tendons and ligaments. These conditions are more common in athletes who play high-impact sports such as soccer or hockey, and who lift weights regularly, like weightlifters or wrestlers.

Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)

Overuse can lead to repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). These injuries include tennis elbow, golfer’s knee, and carpal tunnel syndrome. You can prevent them by wearing support gear such as elbow pads, wrist protectors, or other supports and taking breaks during exercise.

Cervical disc Disease (C5-C7)

The most common cause for lower back pain in developed nations is cervical disc disease. It accounts for as much as 80% of all cases. Degenerative disc changes and intervertebral disks (intravertebral) can also occur. C5-C7 disc herniations may be caused by mechanical forces, trauma, falls, car accidents, sports injuries, or a fall from an animal.

Whiplash injuries

Whiplash injuries are when your neck twists awkwardly when it is forced against a hard surface such as a car door or other doors. This sudden movement can cause injury to your vertebrae and ligaments as well as discs in the neck. This can lead to stiffness and chronic pain for many months.

Muscle strains

Because they are used in many daily activities such as lifting, turning and reaching, strain can occur in the neck and back muscles. Overuse or injury can cause muscle strain.

Tension headaches

Tension headaches are caused by irritation in the muscles or tendons around your head. These headaches are usually triggered by anxiety or stress, but can also be caused by poor sleep or too intense exercise at the gym.

Today, back and neck pain is very common. It can be caused by poor body posture, excessive workload, or a bad work environment. Fatigue can be caused by neck and back problems. Orthopaedic Associates specialists should be consulted if you suffer from this condition.
